Jeffrey L. Edison is a 1973 graduate of Howard University.  In 1975 he helped organize the Michigan Chapter of the National Conference of Black Lawyers and has been an active member ever since. He has participated in programs in correctional facilities to address prisoner concerns and has been involved in community organizing around prison issues, police brutality, and political prisoners.

Mr. Edison made his first pilgrimage to Africa, a life-changing experience, in 1987, when he represented NCBL on a hospitality tour of Togo, West Africa. In 1989 he was part of a NCLB and Nation of Islam delegation to Libya. In 1991, he was in a delegation that was invited by the African National Congress to discuss, analyze and present papers on issues that would assist the ANC in its formulation of a South African constitution.

Mr. Edison has regularly travelled to Ghana since 1992.  On December 22, 2022, he and his wife, Shaakira, were granted citizenship of the Republic of Ghana. Jeffrey and Shaakira are co-authors of The Last Bath, a book that documents a Ghanaian painter’s series of murals that tell the story of “Enslavement to Emancipation” in Ghana.
