Quartey, Rex

Dr. Rex Quartey won the 1999 Ghana Book Award by the Ghana Book Development Council of the Ministry of Education for his "immense contribution to creative writing as a POET of international repute". A product of Accra Academy and the University of Cape Coast Dr. Quartey is a FELLOW of I. W. P. (International Writing Program) of the University of IOWA, U. S. A., the International Academy of Poets, Cambridge, England and the World Academy of Arts and Culture, China.
His poetry is a delicate blend of the modern with the traditional: Dr. Quartey's words stand in the gap between all that is evocative of ancient and African, and that which is refreshingly modern. His poetry has appeared in several literary Journals and anthologies including OKIKI, WEST AFRICA, 1980 International Portland Review, World Poetry (Poetry Africa), Our Soul's Harvest, African Voices (Evans Brothers) and the New York based Greenfield Review.
Dr. Quartey won the only Poetry Award in the 1970 All African Literary Competition from the University of California, Los Angeles, and was published in the prestigious AFRICAN ARTS journal. Dr. Quartey is a pioneer reader in the GBC's Voices of Our Time and hosted Living Arts TV programmes, and his own voice rings strongly through this evocative collection of poems.
